The new expansion of Edmonton International Airport was designed to meet programmatic and environmental projections for 2015 and required an incremental construction schedule, avoiding disruptions of existing operations. Further, sophisticated post 9-11 domestic and international security measures and the amalgamation of Air -Canada and Canadian Airlines added to design challenges. Today, the signature sweeping curve of the terminal roof accentuates the expansion on the landscape and provides a spectacular Central Hall where it connects to the original building. A dramatic structural system of derrick columns and industrial steel connections honour the city’s relationship to the regional industries of gas and oil.
